Pies & Pints Restaurant & Brewery

The Stats

Location: Waterbury, CT

History:  In 2011, Pies and Pints opened in a historic building in downtown Waterbury.

Food Service: Yes, menu filled with standard pub fare and pizza. We ordered the Buffalo Chicken Pizza and it was definitely above average. The crust was very crispy and yummy!

The Scenario

Located in downtown Waterbury, the parking is ROUGH. You are forced to find street parking unless there was a lot or a garage somewhere we missed but that seems doubtful. Walking in, we first used the wrong door since there weren't a lot of signage directing us to the correct entrance. When we finally entered we noticed that there is a restaurant side and a bar side, we quickly took the road more traveled and chose the bar side which consisted of a few other groups who had just seemed to have finished a local 5K. The bartender quickly greeted us and asked us what we wanted. Looking at the beer menu we were disappointed to see that there were only three beers that were brewed by Pies and Pints. The rest of the beer on tap were local craft brews. We ordered and were delivered our pints and pizza after a longer than usual wait for both. While we were waiting we heard a group behind us order their Coconut Porter and the bartender replied that it didn't really even taste like coconut. As we sat and enjoyed our provisions, the guests in the bar area left slowly and we ended the experience as the only two left in the entire restaurant, let alone the bar (this was a Saturday at 1.)

As for the brewery part of the restaurant, it is unclear if they brew their beer on premise. We would venture to guess they don't. Their Coconut Porter was brewed in partnership with Captain Lawrence Brewing Company so it could be that they contact their brewing out to larger facilities.

The Ratings

American Pale Ale

D: 3/5 - Nothing too special.

Bulldozer West Coast IPA

K: 1.5/5 - Very hoppy. Ruined my tastebuds for a while after...

Final Thoughts

D: 1/5 - I'm gonna say that we probably won't be returning. There wasn't much to this place and the lack of variety of house brews was disappointing. The pizza was pretty good so that could warrant a stop at another location in our travels in the future if we were starving.

K: 1.5/5 - I'm not sure what to do with this review. If I were to rate this as a brewery, which I guess I have to do, I think this is what it deserves. The pizza was pretty good so that was fantastic, however both the on-premise beer selection and their taste just didn't do it for me. The atmosphere was bland and glum and the service was sub-par. As strictly a pizza place and bar, I think that it is worth stopping in at. Their local craft beer selection is really great! That being said, they have marketed this location as the "brewery" and therefore, I don't think it can compare to many of the great breweries we have experienced.
