Neither Beer nor There: Growler & Gill Craft Beer Bar

History: The name says it all. Having 24 beers on tap at any given time, Growler and Gill allows you to fill up a 64 oz growler with any of their beers on tap or to have a 4 oz tasting, as the English say, a "gill." Their self-proclaimed "beer geeks" will take your preferences and recommend a beer just for you. Providing beer on tap, food, as well as a bottle shop, Growler and Gill is a unique experience for both the causal and enthusiastic beer drinker

The Scenario

This spot is in a very interesting location. It is both hard to find and hard to believe when you pull up. It is located next to an extension site of SUNY Empire State which looks exactly like another store front. The outside is pretty ordinary, it certainly does not look like a restaurant/bar but as soon as you walk inside that changes. We were greeted by a very friendly manager/owner and seated immediately. The employees were very friendly and explained that we could go up to their bar on our own and get whatever we wanted while the waiters/waitresses would take our food order. We wish we would have known that if you start a tab at the bar they could also transfer that to your food order, but I digress. We tried a number of beers and enjoyed our food. We ordered a quesadilla, boneless wings and the AMAZING truffle fries. The day we went they had a pumpkin beer takeover which was fun and different. They also have a heated tent area outside which we scoped out as we were leaving. 

Final Thoughts 

D: 5/5 - Very cool spot! I have no doubt we will be back. The food was really good. I had wanted to try their beer mac & cheese that I had seen so many people raving about but, unfortunately, they were out of it by the time we ordered. The cinnamon sugar rim using cararmel was amazing and something I had never seen before. I definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for some good food and good beer.  

 K: 4.5/5 - Overall a really great place to spend a weekend day. They had the football game on TV and had a variety of beers ready for tasting. Since it was the fall they offered to have any pumpkin beer dipped in caramel sauce and then in cinnamon sugar creating a delectable rim. I think the food combined with the selection of beer can't be beat. The bottle shop scenario only adds to the complexity of this establishment. I would highly recommend any beer lover to stop here if in the area!

Mike and Joe have more than 25 years of brewing experience and have always been music lovers. This brewery is a stark contrast from its neighbor, Two Roads, just 3 minutes down the road. The small taproom gives this brewery a home-y feel. The first time we visited, we were greeted similarly to the locals on Cheers . We felt welcomed immediately and this time was no different. Although, FCA and Two Roads are very different structurally, they do have one thing in common: they brew good beer.

Pushing the limits of b eer making, Goldwater boasts over 14 beers to choose from . Goldwater opened less than 3 years ago and has two tasting rooms. A main tasting room and a basement tasting room reserved for cask ales only open on Satur days.
