The Scenario

We came to Mesquite River on a quiet Thursday afternoon. First of all, they are located in a random strip mall and it is very hard to find. You will find their above awning sign as "MRB." Luckily for us, they had a small sign in the entrance of the lot directing us to their space in the strip mall. Upon walking in, we saw that there were some very comfy looking chairs and a big screen tv. It looked almost like a cozy doctors waiting room in the entrance but when we looked up we saw the long bar as well as some long table seating and a possible stage toward the back. This place is very decieveing. On the outside it looks very tiny but on the inside it is actually rather large. If you sit at the bar, you can see past it into their brewing room where one of the head brewers was constantly going back to to tend to his craft. Since we were the only ones there, the brewer struck up some conversation about where we were from and what kind of beer we liked. He was impressed that we liked a good sour beer and offered us their "Ol Number Six." Along with this beer, he offered two syrups, passionfruit or blood orange. In fact, since he knew we were well informed about the craft beer scene, he gave us his suppliers beer syrup menu and asked us which syrup he should order next for his brew. It was definitely a cool experience to speak with the head brewer and provide feedback and input!

The Ratings

Ole Number Six (Sour)

D: 3.5/5 - Offered with your choice of blood orange or passion fruit syrup. I chose the blood orange which gave the beer a dark cider-like color. Light sour taste, not too tart.

Bad Bob (White IPA)

K: 3.5/5 - A solid white IPA. Definitely bitter but sweet as well to balance.

Final Thoughts

D: 4/5 - This place was great. We were the only ones in there on a Thursday afternoon but I enjoyed the conversation with one of the head brewers (which I don't often enjoy). The beer was good and they offer some intriguing food. The tap room had a good vibe and I could see it as a cool place to hang out with a group.

K: 4/5 - Overall I thought that Mesquite River was a really fun brewery. Yes, it was empty. Yes, they were only 8 weeks old when we visited. However I really enjoy a brewery that gets to know its customers, provides good beer with some helpful background information, and is curious on how to improve their product. If you are looking for a polished macrobrewery, this isn't your place. However, if you want a local spot with a super friendly staff who genuinely loves their product and craft beer, then look no farther.
